Whenever I've stayed at a B&B my
expectations were simple enough - a good bed, a good breakfast and a
goodbye. Recently, selling my place and flat hunting in Harwich where I'd
always planned to retire (shipping anorak), I needed somewhere to stay
locally. Travelling every day from my son's in London wasn't on, so,
naturally enough, I looked for a B&B.
I found Farm Cottage online, emailed and was immediately relaxed with Andy's
friendly welcome. He understood what I was after, explained that I might
have to change rooms as his bookings dictated, but he would accommodate me
for as long as it took to find THE flat. I did the deal with my buyer,
packed my bags and pitched up at Farm Cottage. You glimpse the view through
the garden. Andy loaded himself with my stuff, allowing me to carry a small
rucksack, and showed me to my room. The place is all views. Farmland, an
acreage of undulating fields on all sides. Farm Cottage atop a hill, you're
IN the view. I have a favourite spot. Sitting at a table in an arbour,
laptop, phone and camera to hand, I got on with the search.
A dreary outlook, one might think. Andy knew a guy. I'd arranged viewings
with the two big names in the town. Andy suggested a friend's agency, and,
cutting it short, within a week I'd found my flat. I'm writing this at my
desk overlooking the Mini Marina and the Stour. Just outside the front door
of the building, Halfpenny Pier where I used to come whenever I could to
look at ships and photograph. Felixstowe is across the Orwell, and
I can watch the action whenever I want, which is a lot of the time. Sad, I
know.
I won't bore you with all the other helpful kindnesses Andy and his family
showed me, not least giving me lifts into the town and back when my car
broke (having tried to fix it themselves). I needed furniture. Andy knew a
guy. I was made very welcome, I have made friends, but there is one thing
I'm miffed about. Having to make my own breakfast.
When I don't step outside to the cafe.

Trip type: Solo travel
The hotelier introduced himself
with a friendly smile and offered to carry what little luggage I had.
Within 2 minutes of arrival I was sat in a cosy dining room with a
perfect cup of tea as my host 'Andy' ran through the little
administration points which needed to be addressed. First of all the
breakfast timings are flexible to suit the guests wishes and a quick
'tick the boxes' form lets him prepare exactly the breakfast you like
for the following morning. I was thinking, I wonder what I'll do this
evening, I was transiting through to catch a ferry the following
morning, so anything 'big' was out of the question. It transpires that
Andy has covered most of the bases. First of all is the garden, at the
bottom of which is a stunning vista over the local fields and woods. A
place is provided to sit and contemplate the world and I did just that.
Then something strange happened, I actually found myself relaxing! On
returning to the house, I found a large collection of books in the
dining room which I was invited to browse through if the need arose. On
going into my room I discovered the usual tea/coffee making
accoutrements as well as the obligitory colour TV. What was surprising
was the DVD player (with disks provided) and a code for the wireless
internet (free of charge!). The bed was fantastic and I slept extremely
well. Andy tells you on the arrival brief that this is his home and you
are invited to treat it as your home. I regret only one thing from my
stay, I am not normally a breakfast person and normally start the day
with just toast and tea. I wish I had tried a full breakfast, if it was
anywhere near as good as the hospitality and the overall standard of
this guest house Andy would no doubt have a Michelin star. Be careful,
the prices are deceptive. In this day and age, too often you get what
you pay for. If this establishment was being run by someone with less
morals it could easily command £50-70 per person/per night. As a 'B&B'
this would make an excellent base of operations for people discovering
the region or as I used it as a stopover prior to meeting a ferry
appointment.
Well done Andy, I'll see you soon!

▄ "Great to find a place that's like a home
from home- especially when you're travelling alone. Andy & his family are
very welcoming & chilled, and nothing's too much trouble. Maybe a good idea
to let people know how close to the A road the 'campsite' is (I was
surprised by the noise). Shared bathroom worked well for me (& great that
loo downstairs if you're camping!) but maybe an idea to let people know how
many people can be sharing at busy times. I had a great time and some
fantastic conversations - thanks so much!" Helina.

Hi Andy
Better late than never, you may have forgotten us already but I still want
to thank you for your hospitality and the use of your tent on the 27th
of July. We completed our three week cycle tour of England, the weather
lived up to its English reputation at times and we were not too impressed
with some of the campings. Overall though it was a very enjoyable trip,
especially some parts of Kent. We are now chilling at my brothers home in
Holland which coincidentally has a very similar setting as your place. I’m
busy telling my story on my blog

-
- Just a short "thank-you" for a
fantastic night spent in one of your tents, due to a couple of Danes
not being able to look in the calendar and remembering when they were
supposed to go home. We stopped by one early tuesday afternoon in the
beginning of August, after finding out that our ferry back to Denmark
did not leave Harwich until wednesday, and so had to think of some way
of spending the night with our ten year old son. You took us in on
short notice, and let us have one wonderful evening and night,
experiencing yet another night of unsurpassed british hospitality.
No promises yet to come back, but if we ever find ourselves in a jam
again in GB, we know where to go for superior service and wonderful
breakfast.
Keep up the good work mate, for making us feel welcome without
booking. Couldn't have found a better place to stay the night.
Love from Denmark,
Pernille, Mads and Thomas

Keep it up, well be back for sure!"
(Taken from trip Advisor)
"This year (2010), I made a little
backpack tour through the United Kingdom, Scotland and Germany. On our way
back from Scotland to the Netherlands we had to stay in Harwich for one
night, since the Stena Line ferry leaves at 9.00 am from Harwich port.
We were very happy to find Farm Cottage on the internet, because we
thought it to be very difficult to find an affordable hostel or hotel next
to the port. Well, our choice couldn't had been any better!
First of all, Andy (the owner) got us a taxi to collect us from the
railway station London Wrabness at night, FOR FREE! After a 15 minutes
drive we arrived at Farm Cottage. We got a very warm welcome, with a nice
cup of English tea. Andy brought our luggage to our room upstairs and told
us to 'feel at home' and to do whatever we liked...
We had a very nice and cosy evening in the living room, together with two
other guys who stayed there as well. Andy is a very kind host, who is
really interested in you as a person and almost feels like a friend.
Nevertheless he still treats you as his guest and he would do almost
anything to comfort you!
Our room was very nice and clean, pretty big with our own televsion and a
nice double bed. Besides that we could use the living room anytime and
could take books to read and choose from a very big DVD collection with
dozens of great movies. There is also a very nice and modern bathroom,
with shower, bathtub and two toilets. Everything in great condition and
very clean, just as our room.
The next morning, we had to get up at 6.30 am to get dressed and have
breakfast at 7.00. Andy was already out of bed and cooked us scrambled
eggs and made toasts etc. You can choose many things and he'll cook it for
while you're waiting, where do you still get such fresh and home made food
nowadays?
At 7.30 we had to leave to the port, to catch our ferry on time. But we
didn't have to call a taxi or go by bus, cause Andy brought us himself in
his little white Porsche 944! How great is that?
So, we just had a really fantastic stay at Farm Cottage! The rooms are big
and clean, the bathroom is perfect, the food is awesome and andy is the
best host you'll ever get! We can only recommend Farm Cottage to anyone,
cause it's damn cheap too! "

29 Dec 2009 | Trip type: Family
We arrived at the Farm Cottage in Tinker Street
on Boxing Day, Saturday 26th December 2009, in the evening. We stayed
for 1 night and checked out on Sunday 27th December. When we arrived we
were pleasantly surprised at the high standard of the accommodation,
having stayed recently during the past 6-9 months at BB Hotels in
Manningtree and Harwich which were just not in the same league as the
Farm Cottage. Andy was very hospitable and our rooms were lovely and
comfortable. Everything in the cottage was very clean and tidy.
Breakfast was absolutely delcicious, there was lots of it and it was
definitely value for money!
My partner, Graham, and I stayed in a really lovely bedroom and Graham's
twin daughters (aged 10) also had a lovely bedroom. The reason that we
booked the Farm Cottage was because we were visiting Graham's parents
who live in Dovercourt, Harwich to celebrate Christmas with them and
there isn't enough room for us to stay overnight at their house. I found
the Farm Cottage on the internet and I am so glad that we booked it and
stayed there. I would definitely recommend the Farm Cottage to
friends/acquaintances. Rest assured, that we will definitely be going
back to the Farm Cottage in 2010 - Sonia Harry and Graham Mobbs, 29th
December 2009
- Date of stay December 2009

- Travelled with Family with Young Children

Dear Andy, Many thanks for the very professional way that you looked after
the Morgan for me and protected my interests in the car. Also your
kindness in taking me to Colchester for a hire car was also very much
appreciated. Your sincerely Tony.

Hi Andy,
Just a quick email to say thank you very much for your hospitality.
Our stay was very comfortable and it was nice to feel so welcome. If
I'm ever up this way again, you'll be the first one I call for a place to
stay.
Regards Matt (Plymouth)
